Position Summary

The Department of Foundational Sciences & Humanities (FSH) of Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science invites applications for the part-time position of Course Director for Clinical Foundations of Medicine (CFoM).

The Course Director is responsible for coordinating all facets of the course, including, but not limited to: oversight of lectures and hands-on labs; oversight of assigning and tracking clinical preceptorship experiences; determining D2L site content; assessment and grading; student remediation as needed; and communication and collaboration with other course faculty, other course directors, the simulation center, and appropriate curriculum committees.

CFoM is a required course for all first-year students in Chicago Medical School. In this course, students learn clinical reasoning skills, pathophysiology of some common diseases, the general approach to patients with common symptoms, and interpretation of basic diagnostic studies. Students participate in a series of in-person clinical experiences with real patients and in simulated environments. The course covers fall, winter and spring terms. The primary methods of teaching are lecture, small group discussion, skill-building workshops, and clinical encounters.

Who We Are

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS) is a five-college graduate health sciences university dedicated to the interprofessional education of health and biomedical professionals. Chicago Medical School, the original college of the five, has been educating physicians and furthering biomedical research for more than 100 years. Established in 1912, the founders built a combined medical school and hospital where working men and women could study medicine at night.

As a community-based institution, CMS students experience a variety of clinical environments and models; including, inner-city and suburban hospitals, the James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center that serves U.S. military personnel, as well as private clinics and practice settings. Training focuses on positioning patients at the center of care and as an active member of the healthcare team. During student didactic training, CMS simulation labs allow students to sharpen their interactive and communication skills and develop critical reasoning. Students have early clinical contact, experience a supportive environment, and can count on a faculty dedicated to student success.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Create or modify objectives for the course.
  • Oversee the content of the course.
  • Create the course schedule and update the syllabus as needed.
  • Assist in the recruitment of faculty to be onsite and of offsite course preceptors; provide orientation as needed, and direction for their duties.
  • Collaborate with the offsite preceptors to provide expectations and facilitate the shadowing experiences for the M1 students.
  • Monitor educational quality to assure comparable learning experiences between offsite preceptors.
  • Be responsive to student feedback, making improvements when possible, keeping the Curriculum Committee informed.
  • Supervise the reporting of CFoM preceptor hours required to teach the clinical skills portion of the course with the CSD budget team.
  • Supervise recording of the cost of external preceptors required to teach the external preceptorship portion of the course and share with the FSH budget team.
  • Oversee development of a schedule for M1 students to sign up for off-site clinical experiences.
  • Oversee the design and content of the D2L course site.
  • Oversee assessment activities that reflect course content and objectives.
  • Complete the CFoM Course Director Report and attend the Y1/Y2 Curriculum Committee review of the course.
  • Meet (at least annually) with other faculty members teaching in the course to discuss suggestions for improvement in the next academic year.
  • Provide an opportunity for remediation if students fail any component of the course.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience
  • Doctor of Medicine MD, or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine DO
  • Three or more years of teaching experience at the graduate level in a health professional school or hospital.
  • An official transcript for the highest degree earned and also the highest clinical degree earned, if different and relevant to the position
  • Must achieve satisfactory results from a background check

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and problem-solving ability
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clinical and basic science faculty
  • Dedication to educating a diverse body of future physicians
  • Understanding of interprofessional medical education implementation methods
  • Communicating in a timely fashion via email, phone or in-person

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching through facilitation of interactive student-centered case discussion
  • Experience in medical education curriculum development
  • Experience with other educational or healthcare-related accrediting bodies
