JOB TITLE: Community Development Director

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT: Full Time, Regular

HOURS: Monday Friday; 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.

LOCATION: City Hall, North Kansas City

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Responsible for administrating city-wide community development programs. Responsible for planning and zoning activities, including preparation and maintenance of master plan, code enforcement, and professional support and guidance to the planning commission, board of zoning adjustment, and elected officials. Performs managerial and professional work related to development, long-range planning, business growth, utilization of land and economic incentives programs, including grant programs. Serves on the Citys Executive Management Team.

JOB SKILLS: Must possess a bachelors degree in urban planning, public administration, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. Masters degree is preferred. Must have at least five (5) years of progressive career experience in the areas of planning, zoning, code enforcement and community/economic development. We would prefer a candidate with current AICP Certification; if you dont currently have you must obtain (and maintain a valid Certified Planner certification (AICP). Must posses and maintain a valid drivers license.

JOB DUTIES: Develops and directs all departmental operations and activities; develops short and long range planning projects; applies city comprehensive plan, codes, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to zoning, land use, and site development; analyzes data for impact on land uses, traffic, drainage systems, environment and other issues; works with consultants on planning initiatives and implementation of planning studies; provides staff assistance to the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Adjustment; Attends City Council meetings and other planning meetings; manages staff assignments; provides planning and development advice and counsel to applicants, property owners, developers, businesses, and others; develops incentive programs that promote city development and redevelopment; makes presentations to supervisors, elected officials, boards, commissions, and the general public; represents the City on interlocal and regional committees; assists with special projects and performs other similar assignments. Supervises Code Compliance Division.

PAY & BENEFITS: Beginning salary range $86,133/year - $118,433 DOQ; group medical, dental and vision insurance; paid vacation, sick & personal leave, paid parental leave; pension and retirement plan.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in an office environment; and in the field, subject to weather elements and in close quarters; may be required to reach with hands and arms, sit, stand, talk, and hear, and use hands to finger, handle or feel; may be required to lift/move up to 25 pounds (such as a box of paper).
