Responsibilities

Major Function

The Communications Manager, Climate & Energy, plans, develops, and leads innovative media and external affairs strategies to advance WWF's conservation mission and drive engagement with policymakers, the public, influencers and media. The Communications Manager leads WWF-US' climate communications, working closely with Climate & Energy team experts and leadership while coordinating with other teams across the organization.

This position is embedded within the Communications and Marketing Division but serves as a member of the Climate & Energy core team and is also accountable to the Senior Vice President, Climate & Energy, who will jointly set performance goals for the Manager with the Director, Media & External Affairs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the Director, Media & External Affairs, and in collaboration with the Senior Vice President, Climate & Energy, manages the Media & External Affairs' team's external and internal engagement on all climate & energy-related work.

  • Creates and leads comprehensive, integrated and proactive communications strategies and tactics to promote and support WWF's conservation goals and advance implementation of WWF-US' climate & energy strategy. Measures and reports out on the impact of those strategies.

  • Works across the organization to develop the strategy, messages, approaches, and deliverables to ensure high-impact climate and energy communications. This includes managing the creation of associated content across WWF's channels and developing integrated campaigns to engage the general public and critical stakeholder groups.

  • Develops and manages major communications initiatives and projects to support WWF's work on climate and energy, including in support of the organization's engagement with government, the private sector, city and local leaders, WWF membership and the general public.
  • Leads the development of WWF-US communications strategies for priority national and international meetings, conferences and events. Drives implementation of these strategies at these events. May travel to key national and international events, field programs, other WWF offices, corporate headquarters and other locations both domestically and internationally.
  • Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with key journalists, external partners, and with other WWF teams. Works with WWF-US goal communicators to ensure integration of climate messaging within other team's communications.
  • Coordinates closely with communications and program staff at WWF-International and other WWF National and Program Offices to develop and manage outreach and engagement activities.
  • Manages and oversees junior communications staff and interns who create content and support climate and energy communications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
