Summary of Position

JobsOhio's Project Finance Team manages the underwriting and administration of JobsOhio and Development Services Agency (DSA) loan programs; including but not limited to: JobsOhio Growth Fund Loan, JobsOhio Revitalization Loan, JobsOhio Site Inventory Program Loan, Ohio Enterprise Bond Fund, 166 Direct Loan, Innovation Ohio Loan Fund and Research and Development Investment Loan.

The Commercial Underwriter is primarily responsible in loan origination (in partnership with Regional Partners and Project Managers), understanding and analyzing credit risk, determining and obtaining information needed to thoroughly evaluate risks, preparing loan packages for Loan Committee approval, including concise written narratives. The Underwriter will verbally, at a high level, summarize the loan package for Loan Committee and be able to anticipate and prepare for expected questions from Loan Committee. Thereafter, the loan package is presented to an Independent Review Panel of business and academic leaders from OH. The Underwriter will be the liaison between JobsOhio Legal Staff and Company up to and including the Organizational Call (reviewing term sheet conditions with internal and external legal counsels, company leaders, etc, to ensure clear understanding before loan documentation begins). The ideal candidate must have the ability to prioritize and adapt to changing deadlines, advanced interpersonal and communication skills, and the desire to work as a team.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ability to analyze a wide range of industries, company sizes, and traditional and non-traditional lending standards:
    • Small (>$3MM revenue), medium ($10MM to $1 Bil.) to Large (>$1 Bil. revenues),
    • Commercial & Industrial (C&I), Commercial Real Estate (CRE), Technology, Health Care, etc.
    • Complex projects with multiple sources of capital.
    • Growth stage companies that may qualify for specialty loan programs outside of traditional lending standards.
  • Effectively communicates with project finance managers, project managers, and regional economic development partners (internal clients) to resolve issues.
  • Effectively communicate financial concepts to individuals of varying experience and understanding
  • Have working knowledge of Accounting Practices so to enhance ability to understand non-cash, non-recurring, and other impactive items to analysis of recurring operating cash flow.
  • Manage the underwriting process for timely decisions.
  • Maintains knowledge of JobsOhio and DSA guidelines and risk rating requirements.
  • Appropriately identifies credit risks of existing loans for accounting and auditing purposes

Experience Requirements

  • 2 years of experience underwriting loans for business/commercial clients
  • Effective written and verbal communication/presentation skills
  • Proficient user of Microsoft especially Word and Excel.
  • Experience using Moody's Analytics (or similar product) and Salesforce a plus
  • Strong teamwork and partnering skills with ability to effectively manage the expectations of multiple internal/external constituents.
  • Strong organizational skills; able to maintain multiple projects and tasks effectively
  • Excellent analytical skills; ability to quickly understand complex problems and recommend solutions.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree: preferably in Finance, Accounting or Business
