POSITION SUMMARY The Coding Manager is responsible for directing the inpatient and outpatient coding and data abstraction function. The Coding Manager is responsible for monitoring the coding staff, scheduling, new hire training and active participation in the annual evaluation process. This position designs, implements, and maintains coding quality monitoring, health information management compliance, and education of hospital staff involved with coding and data abstracting. The Manager assures the quality of service by maintaining current knowledge of coding and DRG grouping, quality initiatives, data collection and reporting, outpatient coding systems, and federal compliance requirements and effectively communicating this information to departmental staff and other affected hospital departments. The Manager assists with management of the computer systems used for data collection and coding and provides data analysis and statistical reporting. This position actively interacts with the medical staff, ancillary departments and financial services to assure accurate and complete coding and statistical information. This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation. QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management required. In lieu of Bachelor's degree minimum 7 years HIM and Coding experience required, with 3 or more of those years in a managerial role. LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: CCS required. Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) with, Certified Coding Specialist preferred. Certified ICD-10 CM/PCS Trainer preferred. EXPERIENCE: Must have working knowledge of clinical data bases, data reporting requirements, and personal computer applications preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire. PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS Demonstrates the competencies as established on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool for this position. WORK ENVIRONMENT Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, hazardous substances, and potential injury. This position requires sitting, standing, walking, stooping and crouching, visual acuity, finger and hand dexterity a majority of the workday. Occasional lifting up to 20lb's required. Works with such equipment as computer terminal, fax machine, printer and copier. The essential functions for this position are listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool. REPORTING RELATIONSHIP This position reports to department leadership and supervises incumbents as assigned.
