MPD is the largest provider of trial level public defense services in the state of Oregon, with three offices in Multnomah and Washington counties.

Community Law (CL) is the civil law division of MPD. We partner with government agencies and organizations to serve our clients, working together to help clients navigate the legal system, remove barriers to economic opportunities, and deliver justice.

MPD is searching for a Housing Attorney to join Community Law.

The Housing Attorney will help keep Portland-area families housed, maintaining an active caseload of clients facing eviction, both at the notice stage as well as in eviction court. This position requires regular in-person court appearances. The attorney will successfully work with clients in vulnerable situations, use technology efficiently to collaborate with colleagues, and manage their active caseload. The attorney will become well versed in state and local housing laws.

Compensation:

This position pays $64,443.60 - $95,212.52 per year. Staff are members of a union. This is a full-time exempt position. In addition to compensation, MPD also offers:

Medical (choice of PPO or HDHP), Dental and Vision 100% employer-paid-for employee-only coverage

Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA)

Basic Life, STD, LTD and ADD&D 100% employer-paid

401(K) Employer will contribute up to 6% of annual salary with full vesting after the completion of 5 years of service

PTO Starting at 10 days/year and increase up to 15 days/year after 2 years of service

10 paid holidays + 2 floating holidays

4 Mental Health Days per year

Sick Leave 6 days upon hire + 6 days after the completions of six months of employment (and 12 days each year thereafter)

Qualifications:

  • Oregon bar admission or eligible for admission
  • Demonstrated commitment to justice for low-income, vulnerable, and marginalized individuals and households
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and sensitivity in working with diverse clients, communities, and colleagues
  • Creativity and flexibility in solving problems and meeting challenges
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to appear in person in Multnomah County Circuit Court

Preferences:

  • Experience with administrative and/or court proceedings, particularly in housing matters
  • Experience representing low-income clients

Work Environment:

  • MPD fosters a work environment that is friendly, cooperative and respectful.
  • Community Law has a primarily remote work environment. Housing attorneys regularly appear in person in Multnomah County.
  • Attorneys work 40 hours per week and possess a willingness to work occasional irregular hours to meet the needs of clients.
