Position Summary

The Camp Director under the direction of the Senior Director of Camp manages the planning and execution of Day Camp by Community volunteer led day camp program. Supports the volunteer camp directors in the development and administration of day camp and outdoor activities and operations related to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience program delivery with a focus on environmental awareness, health and wellness, and leadership and self-esteem. This person identifies, directs, and supervises seasonal staff and volunteers. Responsibilities include development, organization, implementation and management of the camp pathway operations, systems, and processes. The camp director supports ongoing seasonal staff and volunteer development; promotes Girl Scouting in the community; and maintains positive parent, public and community relations all year long.

Varies: Office in Milwaukee; Camps in East Troy, Kenosha, Waukesha, & West Bend

Compensation

Annual salary range $50,000-$65,000 commensurate with experience and skillset.

What You'll Do

  • Manage quality summer volunteer-led day camps that are accessible to all girl members and meets their needs and interests.
  • Deliver and extend Girl Scout activities by planning and implementing innovative and relevant outdoor activities and leadership experiences for girls.
  • Contribute to the council's planning, budgeting, and reporting process and individual performance appraisals.
  • Contribute and support the Mission Delivery and Membership teams.
  • Provide Girl Scout visibility and strengthen the image and appeal in the community.
  • Contribute towards the effectiveness of council AA/EEO guidelines by acquiring knowledge and understanding of affirmative action by exhibiting nondiscriminatory behavior in all internal and external relationships.
  • Manages the planning and execution of volunteer-led day camp at multiple locations, ensures that related program components are consistent with national curricula, outcomes and grade level, and content meets the needs, interests, and preference of current and prospective participants.
  • Responsible for hiring, performance management, providing direction to seasonal staff that results in maximized productivity and excellent customer service, and coaching and training opportunities that result in improved job satisfaction and professional growth.
  • Supports camp and events throughout the year within the context of the camp pathway;
  • Supervises seasonal staff and/or volunteers including recruitment, selection, placement, retention training, development, and release.
  • Engage in learning to build skills towards effectively interacting with people across cultures, ranges of ability, genders, ethnicities, and races.
  • Ensure girl and adult safety through education and promotion of safe practices and consistent interpretation of ATCP-78, GSUSA, GSWISE and ACA policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Under the direction of the Senior Director of Camp, develop marketing strategies to ensure increased participation of Girl Scout members and non-members in the camp pathway.
  • Collaborate with community partners and educational institutions to provide girls with the opportunity to participate in Girl Scout activities.
  • Collaborate with other staff to coordinate and integrate program activities.
  • Supports the preparation and administration of the budget. Prepare reports as needed.
  • Support council functions through promotion of council sponsored activities. Promote the Girl Scout culture of philanthropy by cultivating and building relationships with strategic partners. Act as a consensus-builder with parents, community volunteers and GSWISE staff to sustain positive relationships.
  • Effectively and respectfully communicate instructions, issues, and needs with volunteers, staff, board members, and donors including with people across cultures, ranges of ability, genders, ethnicities, and races.
  • In the absence of the Property/Camping Services Manager(s) at DCC camp sites, respond to property related emergencies (i.e. storm clean-up, equipment failures, etc.) and implement emergency procedures as conditions warrant.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and at least 3 years of experience in the area of camp administration and/or recreation management.
  • At least 3 years of managerial experience and experience working with youth required.
  • Ability to recruit, lead and support seasonal staff and volunteers and work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to take initiative, to organize and implement multi-faceted workload with minimum supervision and function as a member of a team.
  • Understanding of budget development and general financial/administrative practices; computer literate with familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets and database management preferred.
  • Ability to prioritize work, train and delegate to others.
  • Ability to work under pressure and shift priorities in response to changing needs.
  • Current certification in or willingness to be certified in CPR and Standard First Aid within first month of hire.
  • Willingness to possess additional certifications (such as food safety, etc.) within the first year of employment.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including extended summer hours, evenings, and multiple weekends.
  • Able to hear, reflect, act on, and learn from feedback regarding identity and equity.
  • Have daily access to dependable transportation, valid driver's license, compliance with the council's policy of automobile insurance limits, and a driving record that meets the requirements for coverage of the council's business auto insurance carrier.
  • During three months of the year be willing to drive to multiple locations throughout the week and even daily to support the camp program.
  • The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is occasionally required to sit and/or stand for long periods and operate office equipment manually. The employee must be able routinely lift 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. During three months of the year physical demands and work environment regularly requires the employee to walk, hike, and work outdoors in wooded areas and on uneven natural paths.

These Skills are a Plus

  • 7 years equivalent experience in the area of camp administration and/or recreation management.
