Position Title: Associate Teacher -New Avenues Dyslexia Program

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The New Avenues Associate teacher position is a unique opportunity to work in a school within a school setting. The mission of the program is to serve children with dyslexia who have above-average academic aptitude and a strong desire to fulfill their abundant potential. The program serves elementary-age students. New Avenues teachers are able to hone their knowledge and experience instructing students with dyslexia while simultaneously participating in a larger school community and expanding their own professional growth through collaboration with the Lower School and Walker faculty at large. The New Avenues Associate teachers work alongside the other teachers in the program as well as grade-level teachers to create a child-centered, multisensory learning environment. The selected teacher will have the primary responsibility for planning, teaching, evaluating, and reporting for students in his/her Structured Literacy groups. The selected teacher will be responsible for providing structured literacy instruction to students in small groups of approximately 3-6 elementary students. The teacher is responsible for establishing relationships with students, encouraging them to communicate respectfully and to optimally develop their self-advocacy and problem-solving skills, along with individual interests and enthusiasm for learning
QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS
The ideal candidate will be an energetic, compassionate, self-starter who embraces the opportunity to nurture students in fulfilling their abundant potential. The ideal candidate will have formal training and experience with age and skill-appropriate teaching methodologies for students with dyslexia or other language-based learning difficulties. A vast knowledge of multi-sensory and research-based diagnostic skills and teaching methodologies is necessary to be a successful teacher in Walker's New Avenues Dyslexia Program. He or she will work with other teachers and staff as a contributing team member to create and sustain a cooperative and positive work environment. All Walker teachers are expected to model professional standards and commitment as they teach and pursue duties within the school.
