Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Associate in Science Communication position. The Associate in Science Communication is full-time from September through June, and part-time (20 hours per week) from July through August, starting at $51,667-commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

Primarily, the associate supports student writing, reading, and speaking in individual consultations and workshops, with particular attention to the science disciplines. The associate designs and facilitates responsive student programming through collaboration with staff and faculty colleagues, to cultivate an affirming, diversity-rich writing and learning community. They are knowledgeable of disciplinary and genre conventions in scientific literature and communication, and of inclusive writing center pedagogy more generally.

Summary of Duties and Qualifications

Writing center practitioner, with attention to science fields

  • Provide individual consultations to support a highly diverse group of students' development as writers, readers, and speakers across the Amherst curriculum.
  • Create and teach workshops, within faculty courses and/or as part of other programming (e.g. for thesis students in the sciences).
  • Coordinate support for student writing, reading and speaking in STEM-oriented summer academic/research programs
  • Consult with faculty to support student writing, reading, and presenting in STEM courses, honors theses, and research programs.
  • Commit to ongoing learning and development through independent learning and active participation in relevant scholarly/professional communities.
  • Partner with staff and faculty to develop and sustain inclusive learning communities and opportunities for students in the sciences.


Contribute to departmental efforts

  • Collaborate on departmental initiatives and events, advancing departmental goals, and attending regular staff meetings.
  • Participate in program design and assessment projects to advance the Writing Center's commitment to equity and inclusion.


Qualifications

Required:
  • Master's degree in relevant field
  • Experience as a writing center consultant or writing instructor to diverse undergraduate students.
  • Familiarity with trends and approaches to scientific literature and communication, research presentations, and common written forms (e.g. lab reports, grant proposals).
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and facilitation skills.
  • Commitment to and demonstrated knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion as related to higher education and especially within the sciences.
  • Experience working collaboratively with colleagues, undergraduates, faculty, and staff.


Preferred:
  • Additional graduate degree or undergraduate major in a STEM discipline.
  • Professional experience in a college writing center serving diverse students, writers with disabilities, and familiarity with academic writing in a range of genres and disciplines.
  • Familiarity with approaches to multimodal presentation and composition, data visualization and storytelling.
  • Experience designing and facilitating culturally responsive programming.
