Associate I, Communications (Hybrid), International Environment



Communications
The Communications department supports leaders at all levels of the institution to promote project and campaign efforts, inform key audiences, and protect and advance Pew's reputation. The department provides a comprehensive range of communications services for all programmatic and administrative units and Trusts-operated projects. Our in-house expertise includes: strategy and message development; editorial support; design and creative services; media event planning; digital and video production; and social media. The unit oversees all communications policies, guidelines, and processes in order to ensure production of the highest quality work and effectively steward Pew's resources.


Position Overview

This position, based in Pew's Washington, DC office and eligible for up to 60% telework, reports to the manager, communications, and is a member of the Pew communications staff supporting the environment portfolio. The associate works primarily on implementing tactics of the communication strategies related to Pew's international environment policy projects, helping to effectively communicate Pew's work and messages. In addition, the associate will provide support to the director, communications on crosscutting projects and events. The position requires strong interpersonal and organizational skills as well as proven writing and editing abilities.

Responsibilities
Media support

  • Develops and cultivates relationships with a comprehensive list of journalists, editors, and producers for environment projects.
  • Pitches interviews for spokespeople and helps with preparation for interviews and public appearances and development of reactive statements.
  • Actively monitors, tracks, and circulates relevant media coverage. Uses tools (such as Cision) to develop media lists and monitor media clips, report releases and speaking engagements.
  • Prepares media clip reports from key announcements, milestones and report releases, and regularly shares earned and social media results with key team members.


Publications, Writing, Online & Multi-Media Communications

  • Writes and edits communications materials in required languages in collaboration with internal teams, such as fact sheets, online articles, newsletters, and other communications materials for public dissemination.
  • Coordinates photo selection.
  • Coordinates closely with other communications teams on the development of digital material and social media content.


Coordination

  • Works with communications colleagues to develop online and print communications.
  • Coordinates activities with colleagues based globally and with the colleagues of other organizations with whom we are working.
  • Fulfills other duties as assigned.


General

  • Supports communications outreach and tactics detailed in communication strategies to support Pew's work to protect the High Seas, as well as key environment events, such as Our Ocean, Convention on Biological Diversity, and other conservation milestones.
  • Drafts submissions to internal reports on communications activities and impact.
  • Contributes to and participates in division and communications department tasks as assigned, as well as broader Pew-wide projects and/or committees as needed.



Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required and a minimum of a year of experience in a communications role at a nonprofit, public policy organization, or agency.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (required) and Spanish (required), including ability to research, outline, write, edit, and proofread communications products.
  • Understanding of the traditional and digital global media landscape and operations, and a successful track record securing global media coverage.
  • Experience creating and maintaining media lists.
  • Ability to work well in a team and independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Good project management skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated judgment, political and problem-solving skills.



Travel
Occasional travel to attend meetings and conferences.
