The mission of the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults is to enable each person who is DeafBlind to live and work in his or her community of choice. Authorized by an Act of Congress in 1967, HKNC is the only organization of its kindproviding training and resources exclusively to people age 16 and over who have combined vision and hearing loss. Students travel from across the country to our headquarters in Sands Point, New York, for on-campus training in assistive technology, vocational services, orientation and mobility, communication and independent living, and our regional offices bring HKNC resources to communities throughout the United States. We currently have an exciting career opportunity available to join the HKNC team as an Assistive Technology Supervisor at our location in Sands Point, NY. The Assistive Technology Supervisor provides evaluation and training to consumers in assistive technology, encompassing: computer systems, software applications, keyboarding, screen magnification, braille displays, screen readers, magnification programs, telecommunication, instant messaging, e-mail, scanning and reading programs, internet skills, portable devices, and specialized software.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide evaluation and training to consumers in the discipline of Assistive Technology.
  • Work with team members to develop and implement learning experiences leading to increased independence, employment, empowerment, and self-advocacy.
  • Provides in-service training information to staff members and others regarding adaptive technology training for DeafBlind individuals.
  • Identifies individual staff development goals and provides input into agency-wide growth and training opportunities.
  • Provides oversight for the equipment and training resources
  • Supervises and evaluates work performance of the AT team members.
  • Coordinates and supervises the AT Intern Program.
  • Actively participates and leads when necessary new innovative Adaptive Technology projects and initiatives.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Masters degree in Adaptive Technology, Rehabilitation Teaching, or related degree.
  • Minimum of three (3) years working with individuals who are DeafBlind or blind/low vision in the area of rehabilitation teaching (Adaptive Technology).
  • Two years supervisory experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in ASL preferred;
  • Knowledge of braille and other methods of communication (alternative communication methods) used by persons who are DeafBlind required, or must be developed within one year.
  • Knowledge of deaf and deaf-blind culture preferred.
