About the role

To provide high quality and professional legal service to the Academic Division of Oxford University Press, the worlds largest university press, to advance and protect OUPs mission and strategy and to support the Divisions business while managing legal risk. All of the core areas of responsibility described below are undertaken by the job holder under appropriate supervision and guidance of the General Counsel, Academic.

A business partnering lawyer who, as a member of OUPs Group Legal function, provides commercially focused and solutions driven legal advice and support for the Academic Division. The Academic Division is a global publishing business which accounts for over one-third of OUP's worldwide turnover. The role is part of a transatlantic team of lawyers who support the Academic Division.
  1. Act as a trusted business partner providing proactive and pragmatic legal support to the Division as required by the General Counsel, Academic, to minimize legal risk, to ensure compliance with the law, and to advance the business interests of the Division and the mission of OUP.
  2. Provide advice on a range of publishing and general commercial matters, including providing primary legal support for OUPs scholarly journals publishing business.
  3. Draft and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements (examples include content acquisition, digital licensing, digital and print distribution, publishing services, advertising and marketing, and operations) and advise on complex transaction structures, including supporting the General Counsel, Academic with M&A matters.
  4. Create standard templates, guides, and training materials to support divisional business models, with proportionate controls while minimizing need for bespoke legal support.
  5. Promptly and effectively address and resolve pre-litigation claims, instructing external lawyers as appropriate, to ensure timely and cost-effective legal advice; help manage litigation with external legal support.
  6. Provide advice on contract, copyright, trademark, libel, and privacy law matters.
  7. Provide day to day legal advice to the Division in the US, UK, Canada, India and elsewhere as required, but not including employment law matters.
  8. Monitor and advise on legislative and industry developments affecting the Division, with a focus on Open Access and related developments, to assist the business in responding to and addressing these developments.
  9. Provide legal advice in relation to antitrust matters where required, and to the Divisional compliance team to support their anti-bribery and corruption compliance activities.
  10. Ensure matters within the Division which affect OUP as a whole and/or affect the other publishing divisions (Education and English Language Teaching) are referred to the General Counsel, Academic for handling or escalation as appropriate.

About you
  1. Lawyer licensed and in good standing to practice law in New York State
  2. A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience, ideally gained from a mix of private practice and in-house experience
  3. Ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders in a globally matrixed organization
  4. Ability to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization including distilling complex issues for a variety of audiences
  5. Excellent drafting, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
  6. Excellent organizational and prioritization skills, including the ability to manage a high volume of wide-ranging matters simultaneously
  7. Strong interpersonal skills and flexibility needed to work as part of a busy in-house team with transatlantic colleagues
  8. Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a virtual environment.

The position is located in New York (remote during the pandemic).
