Student Affairs' vision is to offer services that empower students to lead purpose-driven and culturally sensitive lives both for themselves and in their communities. We support students in a global context, both professionally and personally, and with co-curricular resources and programs.

The Assistant Dean provides leadership and administrative oversight for student communications and community engagement. The Assistant Dean responds to student concerns and collaborates with students, administrative offices, faculty, and academic programs to troubleshoot and resolve student issues. The Assistant Dean will lead university-wide New Student Orientation and Commencement programs and will navigate virtual, hybrid, and in-person forms of program delivery. The Assistant Dean will work closely and collaboratively with the Dean of Students and Office of Diversity & Inclusion to address issues of diversity and campus climate, including fostering an inclusive campus community based on a culture of restorative practices. The Assistant Dean will also partner with the Dean of Students to develop effective assessment models for the unit and for the university.

The Assistant Dean is a key member of the Student Affairs team and collaborates with colleagues in support of their functional areas.

The Assistant Dean must convey a passion for student development and innovative thinking that enhances opportunities for students to succeed in a primarily graduate-level academic and social environment.



  • Provide leadership and direct oversight of Student Union, including direct supervision of Student Leaders.
  • Develop an operational model of integral student governance based on CIIS's unique demographic and allowing for equity in access and engagement.
  • Develop a sense of community, including in-person and online community structures, for distance and satellite CIIS students, specifically in the growing areas of online, low-res, and hybrid students.
  • In partnership with the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, develop a culture of restorative practice in community spaces grounded in community agreements and respectful ways of engagement.


  • Address student concerns and issues, promoting positive institutional change on behalf of students. Provide facilitation and mediation among students, faculty, and staff as necessary in response to student concerns.
  • Partner with faculty and academic programs to address student concerns and ruptures in the academic environment.
  • Collaborate with the Provost's Office, the Registrar's Office, Student Accounts, Financial Aid, and Admissions in facilitating resolution of administrative issues.
  • Provide thoughtful and balanced management of student advocacy issues in partnership with student leaders, Student Affairs, and CIIS administration.
  • Support the Dean of Students in addressing issues related to student crisis response, student conduct, and Title IX.


  • Oversee the annual institute-wide Commencement ceremony, and the Fall and Spring New Student Orientations utilizing in-person, hybrid, and virtual forms of delivery.
  • Collaborate with Admissions to coordinate the dissemination of information and materials regarding Student Affairs (including Wellness Center and Student Union) to prospective and newly matriculated students throughout the recruitment and admissions process. Represent Student Affairs (including Wellness Center and Student Union) at Admissions events.
  • Oversee the collection and reporting of area crime statistics in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Act.


  • Assist in leading the coordination of the publication of the annual Student Handbook and other Student Affairs print and electronic materials in association with the appropriate staff.
  • Assist with the annual Enrolled Student Survey. Assist with the collection and analysis of data that addresses effectiveness of student services. Coordinate the dissemination of analysis reporting to appropriate faculty and administrative offices.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Students in developing and implementing strategic goals and objectives, using assessment data to guide continuous improvement of Student Affairs in support of student learning and services.
  • Collaborate on institute-wide efforts towards student success and retention with the Provost's Office, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Registrar's Office, Student Accounts, Financial Aid, Admissions, and other departments.
  • Assist in management of the Student Affairs operating budget.

Job Requirements:
  • Master's Degree required in higher education administration, counseling, or related field.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in higher education and student services, with a focus on graduate student populations. Experience with student conduct and student activities preferred.
  • Strong leadership skills, vision, student-centered philosophy, and enthusiasm to build on the institute's tradition of integral education.
  • Strong interest in and experience with building community and communicating effectively within online, low-residency, and hybrid student communities.
  • Ability to effectively manage crisis situations.
  • Experience with restorative practices, mediation, and conflict resolution preferred.
  • Ability to develop a network across the organization and cultivate strong interdepartmental relationships.
  • Working knowledge of federal policies, including the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, Title II, and Title IX.
  • Strong working knowledge of best practices for Student Affairs professionals.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse socio-economic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve; and sensitivity to and understanding of historically underrepresented groups, and groups who have experienced discrimination.
  • Outstanding verbal, writing, and presentation skills. Must be able to communicate and interact effectively with students, staff, faculty, and all external constituencies.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends, and to have flexibility and an openness to adapt occasional hours to suit online, low-res, hybrid, and non-traditional schedules.
  • Demonstrated experience in assessment and evaluation.
  • Proficiency in computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite, website updates, electronic communications, Student Information System databases (SIS), online learning platforms, and web-based applications.

Working Conditions -- Duties are primarily performed in an office environment at a desk or computer terminal, typically, Monday through Friday.
