Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Arts Coordinator position. The Arts Coordinator is a part-time, one-year term, casual position with no benefits. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Arts at Amherst Initiative is a cross-disciplinary partnership whose mission is to foster participation in the arts at Amherst College by supporting collaboration across disciplines, facilitating conversations about the arts within the context of the liberal arts mission, and hosting leading artists from around the world.

The Arts Coordinator supports the work of the Amherst Arts Initiative by (1) facilitating communication and program development among faculty and staff in the arts (2) creating publicity for Amherst Arts Initiative programming and coordinating arts publicity with the arts departments and the college's Office of Communications (3) managing the Arts at Amherst Initiative budget, expenses, and grants; and (4) coordinating and hosting visiting artists in the Bailey Brown House, the college's residence for visiting artists. The Arts Coordinator takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

The Arts Coordinator is a one-year, part-time position, ideally suited for a recent graduate who is passionate about the arts, and who seeks practical experience in arts administration, artist relations, communications, project management, and cultural programming. The coordinator normally resides in the Bailey Brown arts house on campus, but it is not required to fulfill the obligations of the position.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

Programming and production support
  • Arts at Amherst Initiative-led events
    • Semesterly Soiree
    • Arts Lunches
    • Alumni in the Arts Reception
  • Assist with the production of sponsored events and initiatives
  • Promote faculty, staff, student, and public programming in the arts

Administrative and financial planning
  • Facilitate committee meetings
  • Soliciting and presenting grant applications, coordinating distribution of grants
  • Managing Arts at Amherst Initiative budget, track expenses
  • Managing payment of subscriptions and bills for the Bailey Brown House
  • Monthly e-newsletters
  • Create annual report

House management
  • Maintenance and Upkeep - Regular communications with Amherst Rental Properties to maintain this historic house, active efforts to replace windows, prevent flooding, address peeling paint, etc.
    • Wintering the house, routine servicing, replacing worn or damaged furniture and household items.
  • General cleaning and upkeep
  • Coordinate and manage stays of visiting artists
  • (If not choosing to live in the house) Regular house checks.
  • Prepare bedrooms
  • Launder bedding and towels
  • Stock the house with tea, coffee, toiletries, and other essential items
  • Regular outreach with Book and Plow on the joint garden project in the Bailey Brown House yard, planting and maintaining garden beds


  • Bachelor's degree from Amherst College
  • Excellent interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated time management, project management and organizational skills
  • Interest in promoting the arts in the life of the college community
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community
  • Degree in the arts or experience in the arts

  • Experience in graphic design or videography
  • Experience creating content for digital engagement
  • Experience in event planning or program coordination
