The Smithsonian National Zoological Park (NZP) seeks a skilled self-starter interested in the field of advancement to join its team of dedicated staff at an exceptional time in our history. We are seeking an Advancement Assistant with a passion for conservation and an interest in helping to save some of the world's most endangered and beloved species. The Advancement Office is located in the heart of the Zoo, providing an opportunity to work collaboratively with animal keepers, scientists and conservationists who are world leaders in their respective fields.

The Advancement Assistant will provide administrative support to the Chief Advancement Officer and NZP's Office of Advancement. This position provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience in all facets of advancement, including individual giving, institutional support, events, donor relations and operations.

The Advancement Assistant will prepare presentations and status reports, maintain gift tables and other matrices to track activity toward strategic and campaign goals, update donor information in the Advancement database, run reports, conduct base level research, prepare correspondence, assist with special event logistics, and perform other administrative tasks associated with office management.

He/she will process all gifts received in the DC office, prepare acknowledgement and stewardship letters, and arrange tours for donors and prospects. He/she will process all department budget expenditures; ensuring funds are properly recorded in systems and reconciled on a regular basis. He/she will make travel arrangements, prepare travel authorizations, book hotels and transportation, and arrange meetings.

Successful candidates will have previous experience in a fundraising office, demonstrate strong attention to detail, have the ability to multi-task and an interest in strengthening his/her skills in advancement. The ability to take initiative and ownership of projects and work with minimal direction and supervision is critical. Candidates should display strong interpersonal skills, an engaging manner, and the commitment to supporting the needs of the advancement team. A Bachelor's degree is required.
