Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Access Services Supervisor position. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Access Services Supervisor is responsible for user services and desk operations at the Robert Frost Library, Keefe Science Library and Morgan Music Library, ensuring excellent customer service to a diverse set of users. Supervises 3-4 full- and part-time employees. Coordinates the work of Access Services Student Assistants in Frost Library. Participates in the development and implementation of department policies, procedures and services. Maintains a Sunday-Thursday 8am-5pm work schedule.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Management
  • Supervises 3-4 full- and part-time employees, including participating in a year-round performance management process.
  • Actively works towards an intentionally inclusive culture for all staff, students and faculty.
  • Maintains accurate documentation on policies and procedures.
  • Stays current with trends in Access Services.
  • Represents Amherst on the Five College Access Committee.

Student Assistant Supervision
  • Hires and supervises student assistants.
  • Develops and implements training programs, using a variety of materials and techniques.
  • Establishes work schedules and makes work assignments.

Scheduled Hours at the Frost Front Desk
  • Provides services and assistance to library users, including charging/discharging materials, maintaining borrower accounts, explaining policies and procedures, maintaining an inclusive and respectful culture, answering questions and referring patrons to other departments within the library or on campus as appropriate.
  • Answers telephone and directs calls as necessary.
  • Participates in departmental discussions about best practices and policy changes.

Frost Front Desk Operations
  • Supervises Front Desk staff.
  • Provides training in desk policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates the desk schedule, ensuring consistent staffing.
  • Ensures accuracy of borrower records.
  • Maintains desk supplies, handouts and signage.
  • Fields user complaints and challenging questions.

Performs other duties/functions as requested
  • Attends regular department, library, division, and collegewide meetings.
  • Maintains documentation for areas of responsibility.
  • Shares monitoring of and responding to messages in the library circulation email accounts.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Associate's degree or 5-7 years of experience in lieu of degree
  • 3-5 years of experience working in Access Services
  • 1 year of supervision of library employees
  • Demonstrated exceptional customer service, including creative problem-solving and a commitment to equitable access
  • Demonstrated close attention to detail
  • Proficiency with MS Office and/or Google Suite and ability to learn new technologies and incorporate them into existing operations
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to effectively supporting a broadly diverse and intentionally inclusive community

Preferred:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1-3 years previous experience working in an academic or research library
